While personalized medicine is shifting from experimental to mainstream, many health organizations are realizing that not only is the IT infrastructure to support the necessary components lacking, but that they look very different than what typically supports a patient-centered health system. In a recent Healthcare IT News article covering a Black Book Market Research Survey, precision medicine was described by respondents as “very hard to implement.” The data required looks very different than what typically supports EHR-driven and connected systems, as it depends on “fine-toothed data that most hospitals simply don’t have.”[1]

"Snap" to the Cloud with New Cloud Snapshots

When it comes to backup practices, snapshots are much loved due to the ease of restoring data quickly to a past form. In the desktop world, Apple brought snapshot technology to the home user with its Time Machine application. In the world of enterprise storage, snapshots serve the same purpose, but at a much larger scale with much larger datasets. Using snapshots, IT can bring back data quickly in the event of accidental deletion or data corruption. These snapshots enhance, but do not replace, more complete backup processes.

Hybrid Cloud Unexpected Results: Agility and Control Trump Cost

While Apple has made significant headway in getting people to switch from a PC to a Mac, many people still have more than one machine running each OS or are running programs for both operating systems on a Mac. While things looked great on the other side, it was simply too difficult or costly to make a complete switch, or necessary applications would not move with you. Many of us live in “hybrid” environment matching the operating system to the task at hand. 

The adoption of cloud compute and storage looks like it is rolling down a similar path.  Like Apple’s market share, cloud usage will continue to grow at the same time as the entire market continues to grow. According to the Cisco Global Cloud Index, more than three quarters of workloads will be processed by cloud data centers by 2018, while overall data center workloads will nearly double in the same time frame.
