Better Cloud File Storage for Amazon WorkSpaces

Posted by Scott Jeschonek on Wed, Jan 13, 2016 @ 08:30 AM

In 2015, Amazon made it clear that it was investing in its Amazon WorkSpaces product with several announcements starting at its April San Francisco AWS Summit where Andy Jassy took the stage to tout ease-of-use developments. That said, Amazon Workspaces users can improve their experiences with better alternatives to WorkSpaces storage management that reduce overall costs and simplify deployment.

10 Steps to Avoiding Storage Virtualization Pitfalls

Posted by Rebecca Thompson on Fri, Feb 21, 2014 @ 11:06 AM

Watching the decade-long growth of virtualization within the server space has led to the assumption that it is nothing but a good thing. By large, the technology is fantastic for improving the utilization and efficiency of computing, but virtualization places great strains on storage. Let's look at the issues and 10 tips for how clever use of Edge filers deals with the perils of virtualization.

Prior to the advent of virtualization, servers typically placed a predictable load on storage. Each server ran a determined application, and the resulting load placed on the storage consisted of a well-understood pattern of I/O against local system’s disks. Rotating hard disks handled this type of data access well, and everyone was happy.

Scale-Out VMware VDI

Posted by Gretchen Weaver on Tue, Aug 27, 2013 @ 04:52 PM

While many of my co-workers spend their days at VMworld in San Francisco, I’m watching the activity in Twitterverse. At this point, I’m not quite sure what people are enjoying more, the awesome technologies or the after parties. Both are getting their fair share of attention. A few have really embraced the "Defy Convention" theme of the conference. (You know who you are.)

Virtualization Dilemma: Skyrocketing Costs of Storage Performance

Posted by Chris Bowen on Tue, Jun 04, 2013 @ 09:18 AM

In virtualized environments, budget and performance demands are moving at different speeds. How long can this continue? A scenario where budgets increase at the same rate as storage demand or even faster seems highly unlikely.

A study of information technology professionals by DataCore Software found some interesting but not surprising results. Consider the following survey findings:

Measuring VDI in a NAS Environment

Posted by Bernie Behn on Thu, May 09, 2013 @ 12:34 PM

This post is part 2 of 2 in our sharing of content presenting in a recent Webinar, Untangling the VDI Storage Enigma. Links to related content are available at the end of this post.

The LoginVSI Benchmark Environment

The only way to really understand how VDI is going to affect your storage environment is to use a testing tool that can reliably simulate your intended environment. The VDI testing tools available in the marketplace require varying levels of capital investment and hardware resource requirements. Avere chose to use the LoginVSI for our VDI performance benchmarking tests.

NAS in a VDI Workflow

Posted by Bernie Behn on Tue, Apr 30, 2013 @ 11:22 AM

Part 1 of 2

In the recent Webinar, Untangling the VDI Storage Enigmawe covered the results of recent tests of VDI's impact on Storage. We’re going to use the Webinar content to dive a bit deeper into understanding its effects and how to measure the quality of the experience. You can also refer to the original summary of these tests here.

What happens to Storage in a VDI Environment?

To understand what happens to storage subsystems in a VDI workflow, we have to look at how the I/O generated by VDI instances moves through the virtualization stack.

Untangling the VDI Storage Enigma

Posted by Bernie Behn on Tue, Mar 26, 2013 @ 09:01 AM

Why does figuring out what storage to use for VDI have to be so confusing?

My head started to spin when I first kicked off our endeavor to determine a sizing plan for VDI storage deployments. Reading all the different white papers, blogs, benchmarks, and vendors' websites, etc., merely intensified the head-spin with information overload. I needed to figure out a way to simplify this all into terms that make sense to me and to virtualization admins out there looking for VDI storage solutions.
